6.3 Mile Run - Red Cross New Zealand Earthquake Appeal

On Tuesday 22 February 2011, a devastating 6.3 earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand killing around 100 people and injuring around 2,500. In its wake it left a catalogue of human tragedy, suffering and a city in ruins.

The trauma is far from over. Over 150 aftershocks have continued to rock the city, over 2000 people have been displaced, many are now living in tent cities. Of those with houses, most are heavily damaged, without water, electricity and sanitation. The elderly are struggling to cope with circumstances even the young are finding a challenge.

For nearly 3 years Kathryn & I lived in Sumner, Christchurch very close to the epicentre of the quake. We know lots of people affected by the quake.

Rather than sit back and watch report after report we want to do something to help the cities people.

Next weekend we are going to do a sponsored 6.3 mile run in aid of the Red Cross New Zealand Earthquake Appeal.

What are the New Zealand Red Cross doing?

New Zealand Red Cross is playing a critical role in the emergency response:

• supporting the international Urban Search and Rescue teams
• looking after more than 1,000 people in five welfare centres across the city
• registering on a national database the details of people affected by the quake, and
• checking on residents in their homes as part of Operation Suburb door-to-door outreach.
